Can I transport the kayak to another lake?
No. All of our rentals are for use on the Cassadaga Lakes only.
Where is the public boat launch, and is there parking and bathrooms?
The main public access point is the Cassadaga Lakes Boat Launch (operated by the NYSDEC), located at the north end of Middle Lake on Glasgow Road. It is a free, public site that features:
- A dedicated kayak launch: A newer “roll-in” style launch was installed recently to provide safe and easy entry specifically for paddlers.
- Parking: The lot has space for approximately 20 cars and trailers
- Amenities: You’ll find a porta-potty and a picnic table on-site
What should I bring with me?
We recommend bringing water, sun protection, and a waterproof bag for your phone or camera. We do have dry bags and coolers available for rent during your trip. If you are paddling between November 1 and May 1, state law requires that you wear your life jacket at all times while underway.
Do I need a special certificate or license to rent a kayak?
No. While New York State law is phasing in requirements for motorized boat operators, these rules do not apply to non-motorized vessels like kayaks. We provide a brief safety orientation for everyone before they head out.
Do I need a special certificate or license to rent the fishing boat?
No. Per New York State law, customers aged 18+ can rent and operate our motorized boats without a pre-existing safety certificate. Before you head out, we will provide a mandatory on-site safety briefing and orientation to get you comfortable on the water.
If you do have a New York Boating Safety Certificate, please bring it with you.
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes. Anyone 16 years of age or older needs a valid New York State freshwater fishing license to fish in Cassadaga Lakes. You can purchase one online with the NYSDEC or at Valley Outdoors located at 16 S Main St, Cassadaga NY 14718. Valley Outdoors also carries a wide range of rods, reels, lures and live bait.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, dogs are permitted on our tandem kayaks for an additional $10 per pet fee. Please add the fee from our product page if you plan on bringing your dog.
We do NOT provide canine life jackets. If you are going to bring your dog, we highly recommend they wear a floatation device. Canine life jackets provide essential buoyancy, visibility, and safety for your pet if they fall or jump into the lake. Jackets with a sturdy rescue handle on the top allow you to lift your dog out of the water and assist them back into the kayak easier with less risk of capsizing.
Are there a lot of power boats on the lakes?
While motorboats are permitted on Cassadaga Lakes, it is a very different experience than larger neighboring lakes. Because of the smaller surface area and the proximity to the Cassadaga Lakes Nature Park, the environment remains exceptionally quiet. Most boaters are local and respectful, making it a sanctuary for paddlers.
Is it safe for beginners?
Absolutely. Cassadaga’s waters are generally calm, and the lack of heavy commercial traffic or large wakes makes it one of the safest places for first-time kayakers. We provide Coast Guard approved life jackets (PFDs) for every guest, which are required to be on board at all times.
Do you cancel for bad weather?
